Who Taught You How to Play?

Book excerpt from What the Heart Hears by B. Cherry:

You’ve got a King in your hands, sis and you don’t even know it…heart, mind, and resentment won’t let him truly show it to you, because if he did you’d swear it too early in the game and you’d think him a Joker instead. Alternating masks when time called for it. Posing and framing his ideals and morals…consciousness, dreams and aspirations in the form of some pseudo identity of this tribe-raised, God made and self proclaimed commandments following man of Aphrodite…yet, in such a way it makes you second guess, “what card to play”. A Queen in every essence of the word…I mean everyone can see that.

“Yet, I thought you were better than that…stuck between a rock and a hard place…stuck between heart and mind and lacking the confidence in knowing that if played right or if someone was playing with you wrong, that you still can walk.”

Yet, you look at him. Hell, you probably look him over a couple times as interests peripherally across the table with other players is what’s got your attention right now… optimistic of your hand and that the dealer dealt you a good one this time around on some days and “Doubting Thomas” on others that while he stands hiding in clear sight,…I mean he could practically stand on water and probably not be any more in clear sight, but you stand idle as it’s “truly dependent of the scenario”, you say. Dependent upon how someone else plays theirs…and there you sit. In ultimate control, of course. Able to step away from the table at a moments notice even if your partner and opposing players were to get up in arms. But you not gone do that. You’re a team player, right? Remember..mama ain’t raise no hoe so..there you sit.

Wearing variations of what I’d describe as somewhere between a Vegas poker face and “I’m not even supposed to be here”.. Frustrated, furrowed brow and side eyes over cards with slightly frayed edges. Scattered thoughts and makeshift attempts at trying to infiltrate the game plan of opposing players…you lead with something you’re not worried about losing and you watch, strategically, to see who bites. To see who looks at it.. question if it’s got some suitors interested in taking the bait. Not too high to make it obvious that you don’t have much in your hand but high enough to make him think twice and prepared to jump if necessary. All.. while….you..gotta King in your hand sis, and don’t even know and that’s the part that baffles me. A statement maker…Command of attention, a valuable asset that if played right by even the most intermediate player in the game could let the table know without words nor parting lips that no matter which way you slice it… “nah.. that’s mine”.

“A return on investment that goes unspoken yet understood. Yet…you choose not to throw it. You hold on to it. The beauty in that is…some say you hold on to your high cards.”

Like if you loved something you’d hold it close… others of the consciousness that you set it free and if it comes back to you than you know it’s real.. however with both being a gamble I say to you, “What you gone do..?”
